  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted (for frosting)
  • ¾ cup dark cocoa powder, softened (for frosting)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (for frosting)
  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, melted and cooled (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  4. Stir in the hot coffee and sour cream until the batter is smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Beat the butter until creamy for the frosting.
  9. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
  10. Mix in heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until fluffy.
  11. Fold in the melted chocolate until fully incorporated.
  12. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread frosting evenly on top.
  13. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  14. Optional: Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.

  • Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without tasting like coffee.
  • Adjust the heavy cream in the frosting for a thicker or thinner consistency.
