Description

Char Siu Chicken is a flavorful dish featuring marinated chicken thighs that are baked and glazed for a deliciously sweet and sticky finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil.
  3. Place chicken thighs in a large resealable bag. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, seal, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (up to overnight). Reserve the other half of the marinade for later.
  4. Remove chicken from fridge about 30 minutes before cooking.
  5. Place chicken on prepared baking sheet. Bake 25–30 minutes, until cooked through.
  6. While chicken bakes, pour reserved marinade into a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  7. Brush the thickened marinade over the baked chicken. Broil for 2–3 minutes, watching closely until caramelized and slightly charred.
  8. Let chicken rest a few minutes, then slice and serve.

Notes

  • Marinate up to 24 hours for deeper flavor.
  • Add a pinch of chili flakes or chili paste for a spicy kick.
  • Serve over steamed jasmine rice, fried rice, or stir-fried veggies.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
