  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup salted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for filling)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for filling)

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and eggs.
  2. Add in 3 cups of flour. Use a dough hook and start on low speed.
  3. Increase the speed to medium as the flour incorporates.
  4. Add up to 1/2 cup of additional flour until the dough is soft and tacky but not sticky.
  5. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Divide the dough into four pieces and roll each into a 12-inch circle.
  8. Layer the first dough circle with butter and sprinkle with 1/3 of the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  9. Repeat with the second and third circles, placing the last circle on top without butter or cinnamon.
  10. Mark the center with a bowl and cut 16 equal strands.
  11. Twist pairs of strands in opposite directions and pinch the edges to seal.
  12. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  13. Serve plain, frosted, or dusted with powdered sugar.
