- 1 cup warm milk (100-110℉)
- 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons salted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup salted butter, softened (for filling)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (for filling)
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for filling)
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and eggs.
- Add in 3 cups of flour. Use a dough hook and start on low speed.
- Increase the speed to medium as the flour incorporates.
- Add up to 1/2 cup of additional flour until the dough is soft and tacky but not sticky.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into four pieces and roll each into a 12-inch circle.
- Layer the first dough circle with butter and sprinkle with 1/3 of the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Repeat with the second and third circles, placing the last circle on top without butter or cinnamon.
- Mark the center with a bowl and cut 16 equal strands.
- Twist pairs of strands in opposite directions and pinch the edges to seal.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve plain, frosted, or dusted with powdered sugar.
